City Council Votes on Development December 2014

Let’s just call December what it is:  Real Estate Development month.  The City had to reimburse some lady for the water damage in her basement due to a sewer pipe that burst.  There was some discussion on an inoculation program.  And we issued a few liquor licences.  But this month was really an early Christmas present to the folks who make their living from developing buildings.

This is why I don’t trust my city government anymore, why I get nervous when I leave town, feeling like I have to stay one step ahead of “them” before they trick us again so we don’t know this stuff is being passed.  Isn’t that sad?

Most of the entries below were from a single Council meeting on Wednesday, 12/17/2014 and many of the items were added on Friday at the last possible moment.  Included in the items below are 2 new TIF Districts (with 2-line descriptors that looks so sweet, so innocent, don’t even mention the single developer benefiting from the deal by name), the new apartment development at 4th & Race, including authorization for the city to buy the property, TIF at the Banks, and the funding of the Port Authority through a long-term lease agreement with Fountain Square South Garage.  Every single one on an emergency basis with the public excluded from every decision.

The good news is that we did get public hearings written into the TIF Districts for the Neyer properties.

First of all, let’s look at changes in independent commissions who are charged with many of the big development decisions citizens will be living with on a permanent basis (or at least a very long time).  These are appointments by the mayor or the city manager.

Zoning Board of Appeals (5 year terms):
Bob Zielasko
Jonathan C. Bennie
Diana Vakharia
Michael Moran

Historic Conservation Board:  (5 year terms):
Don Driehaus (any relation to Dan Driehaus on Planning Commission?)
Herbert Weiss

Port Authority:
Charlie Luken  (it was under Mr. Luken’s tenure that the planning department was dismantled as he felt decisions were best made outside of government)

Planning Commission:  Dan Driehaus
